I first learned about California’s IMPACT program in 2012 when I saw a flyer at a medical office. Applying was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The program connected me with a doctor who guided me through my prostate cancer treatment. I underwent 42 radiation treatments and now receive regular Lupron shots. Surgery wasn’t an option because of where my cancer was located, but the team at IMPACT gave me hope and a clear plan.

Today, at 67 years old, I’m thankful to have more time ahead with my wife and our daughter. IMPACT provides free, high-quality prostate cancer care to low-income Californians, and they truly deliver on that promise. For me, they’ve been my “A-Team,” and I recommend them to anyone who needs help.

A cancer diagnosis is extraordinarily disruptive to every aspect of any person’s life, but for individuals who are functioning in the margins of our economy, it’s especially difficult. Despite improvements in our safety net, many fall through the cracks, and for them, this program fulfills a vital need.

I found out I had prostate cancer after seeing a urologist for severe urinary symptoms. Hearing the diagnosis was overwhelming. I was sad and worried about what it would mean for my health, my future, and my ability to live the life I had planned. I felt scared and uncertain about what would come next.The IMPACT program helped me through that difficult time. The team has been kind, supportive, and always ready to answer my questions. They helped connect me with care and gave me the guidance I needed to focus on my health. Today I’m living a more normal life again, and I’m grateful for the care and support I received.

Our providers remain committed to seeing IMPACT patients in their communities because it’s the right thing to do. These providers show up for our patients every day, even looking for ways to support them after they are no longer enrolled.

A coworker of mine had a checkup and a PSA test. After his PSA levels came back high, he encouraged me to get mine checked, too. When my results came back with a PSA level over 100, I was shocked. My biggest concern was how I would afford the tests and treatment.

Finding the IMPACT program was huge, and I’m incredibly grateful for everything they do.  The program made it possible for me to get the care I needed for free. The team goes above and beyond. They have been attentive and supportive, helping me navigate treatment and making sure I have the resources and guidance to move forward.

Twenty-four years ago, a routine PSA test at age 52 changed my life. The results showed very high PSA  levels, and I was immediately worried about needing surgery. At the time, I had an 11-year-old daughter, and facing cancer felt overwhelming - not just because of my health, but also because of the financial burden. I did everything I could to get the treatment I needed, but I didn't know how I would afford it.

Without IMPACT, I don't know where I would be today. The program didn't just remove financial stress; it also provided personalized attention and helped me navigate every step of my treatment. The team truly cares about their patients. I feel better than I ever thought possible. My message to IMPACT as they celebrate 25 years is keep doing what you're doing. It's truly comforting for patients like me.
